Unblock Cumbria - 6 Tips to Prevent Drain Blockages
Drain blockages are a common occurrence that can turn into a serious blockage if left untreated. Little things that wash down into the plumbing system over time, including hair and food particles, can soon build up to form a clog. Clogging can become a recurring nuisance, but with some simple tips, they are easily preventable. Here at Unblock Cumbria, we have over 30 years of experience in the industrial and domestic markets, providing an array of Drain Services. We would like to share our 6 tips to prevent drain blockages.
The primary cause of blocks is food scraps, hair, and other substances. These wastes cannot be broken down and easily slip into the water system. An easy way to stop debris from entering the plumbing is to install a sink guard, grate, or pop-up stopper – a removable one is the best option. It will make it easier to clean and throw away anything caught. These will cut down most clogging substances, but liquids like grease and oil will still be able to pass through.
Avoid washing grease and oils down the pipe. Although they may be in liquid form, they will quickly solidify, sticking to the walls of the water pipes encouraging the trapping of more wastes. We advise avoiding these substances from getting into the plumbing to prevent potential blockages.
Rinsing the sink and drain with soap and hot water is a great way to dissolve solidified greases and oils. Over time, grease and oil accumulate in the pipes, blocking the flow of water. Food scraps can also become trapped in the accumulation. The hot water and soap solution will soften and liquefy the grease to help it all move along. This is an excellent DIY way to maintain your plumbing system with the added benefit of removing unwanted odours.
To care for the integrity of plumbing systems, avoid pouring in chemicals, paints, solvents, used engine oil and pharmaceutical products. These items can corrode pipes, leading to significant damage. It is important to dispose of such items correctly in compliance with the local environmental laws.
Don’t flush fibrous objects, personal care products and food down the toilet. Although the toilet appears to be an easy option for disposal, just because it flushes down easily does not mean it can’t clog the water system at some point. Many of these products do not decompose easily and are a further burden on water treatment facilities. It is better for the environment by avoiding flushing these clogging risks altogether.
Having regular water system inspections and checking for hard water can make all the difference. In some areas, water can contain natural minerals, which can accumulate inside the drains and restrict water flow. A CCTV survey is a great way to check for all the issues that may arise.
